In Lithuania, ownership has long been considered a guarantee of security and stability, so the desire to own a car is deeply ingrained for many. However, changing lifestyles and new financial priorities are gradually changing this perspective. Ownership is far from always being the most rational solution, and modern consumers increasingly value flexibility – the ability to use a car without long-term financial commitments and the headache of its maintenance.
Just a few decades ago, acquiring a car through leasing seemed unusual or even risky to many. Today, it is one of the most popular ways to get behind the wheel of a new car. Car subscription is slowly following a similar path; it is already known in Lithuania but still not fully understood.
Jonas Vainius Raulynaitis, the sales manager of the car subscription company "MyBee," believes that in the long term, car subscription has every prerequisite to become a common alternative for car use. "A significant number of people have heard of it, but they don't yet fully understand how this model differs from long-term rental or leasing and what value it can provide to both private users and businesses. In Western and Northern European markets, choosing long-term car rental or other flexible usage models instead of purchasing a car has long been common. We see that consumer attitudes are changing in Lithuania as well – more and more people value the ability to use a car without the worries of ownership," says J. V. Raulynaitis.
Car Subscription – Not Leasing and Not Traditional Long-Term Rental
Although car subscription is becoming better known in the Lithuanian market, many consumers still equate it with leasing or long-term rental. In reality,"MyBee" model, while based on long-term rental, differs from standard operating lease contracts by offering greater flexibility, simpler terms, and the ability to adapt more easily to changing needs. Unlike leasing, the main goal is not car ownership, but the convenient use of it.
"The essence of car subscriptions is simplicity and flexibility. The client pays a monthly fee, and all worries related to the car operation remain with the service provider. The most important thing is not owning the car, but the ability to use it as long as needed and to adapt to changing needs," says "MyBee" head of sales.

Fewer Commitments and Worries
One of the most important elements of this model is a clear cost structure. The subscription fee includes the main car operating costs – technical maintenance, insurance, repairs, seasonal tire changes, and their storage. This allows users to avoid additional expenses and to more easily forecast the total cost of using the car. The monthly payment is fixed and does not depend on fluctuations in interest rates.
"People are increasingly calculating not only the purchase price of a car or the monthly payment but also its total maintenance cost and the time that must be dedicated to various maintenance issues. Subscription allows these worries to be transferred to the service provider and to plan personal or company finances more accurately," says J. V. Raulynaitis.
Furthermore, a car subscription provides the opportunity to more frequently switch to a newer, technologically advanced, and safer car. At the end of the contract term, the client can choose another car model or extend the subscription for their current vehicle.
Another important aspect is the lower initial financial burden. The subscription model usually requires a much smaller down payment than leasing. This makes car usage more accessible to those who do not want or cannot "freeze" a larger sum of money.
Subscription also allows for choosing a flexible period of car use. A contract can be concluded for a period of 6 to 36 months, making it easy to adapt to individual needs.
"One of the biggest, yet often forgotten, costs of ownership is the rapid depreciation of the car's value – as soon as a vehicle leaves the showroom, it loses part of its price. By choosing a subscription, this issue becomes irrelevant to the user: they no longer need to worry about what the car's residual value will be after a few years or how the situation will change in the secondary market. Cars of different manufacturers, models, configurations, or even colors lose value unevenly, so it is not easy for an inexperienced buyer to predict it accurately," adds the interviewee.
Who Chooses Car Subscription and Why?
Car subscription in Lithuania is becoming increasingly attractive to different groups of consumers. According to J. V. Raulynaitis, this model is valued by those users and companies for whom flexibility is the most important factor. For private clients, the service is particularly relevant for the self-employed, those with non-standard income, those who have recently changed their living or working circumstances, as well as those who simply want to avoid the hassles associated with car ownership.
"Businesses value this model as an opportunity to plan mobility more flexibly and to focus more on their core activities rather than on car administration. Subscription is especially relevant for small and growing companies for which a clear monthly budget, the ability to quickly obtain a car, and the option to choose a 6–36 month period according to real business needs are important," says the interviewee.
Meanwhile, for foreign citizens starting their professional careers in Lithuania, a subscription becomes a convenient way to drive a car without complex bureaucratic procedures. When concluding a contract, they need to provide a valid document confirming their right to live and work in Lithuania.
